Meet Lutchi

My name is Lutchi Gayot, I was born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. I am a son of hard-working immigrant parents from Haiti, my dad was a public school teacher and my mom- a beautician. Today, I am a small business owner. It is astonishing to see how far our community has come. I remember like it was yesterday, taking my everyday trip on the B44 bus from Nostrand Avenue to the B8. My final destination was St. Rose of Lima school in Parkville. In those days, virtually every neighborhood along the way to school had a street gang and the channel 5 news kept a daily count that hit over 2000 murders in one year. Today, gentrification and redistricting have turned our district into a cultural Mecca! So allow me to take you on a tour- beginning with the Eastern European & Jewish communities of Sheepshead Bay and Midwood. Then, let’s visit a Middle Eastern small business in Kensington. We can take a walk across Prospect Park to catch up with the veteran residents alongside the new generation of artists and entrepreneurs in Park Slope. Let’s catch the 2 train at Bergen Street to Crown Heights. We can walk South through the Hassidic Jewish neighborhoods, then, back on to Nostrand Ave to enter East Flatbush, the largest Caribbean-American community in the country.

With such a diverse constituency, we need a representative in Congress with the mission to service everyone living in our district. That is the reason I've decided to step up, as many other young Americans have this election year. We are in need of representation that recognizes that a family living in Sheepshead Bay shares the same educational, economic and immigration concerns as a family residing in Kensington or East Flatbush. I want to bring fresh ideas to Washington DC in order to further our country's economic success for families, by supporting common sense legislation, that can both raise wages and maintain a friendly business environment to support higher wages.  I will work to secure both public and private infrastructure spending for affordable housing and for our city's transportation systems. Our housing crisis can be solved if we eliminate the heavy-footed government red tape and bureaucracy that does more harm than good when it stands in the way of common sense and innovation. I wish to raise my children in a nation that is just as diverse as our community, a secure place with unity where the seeds of division cannot find fertile ground to grow.

“Ours is a government of liberty by, through, and under the law. A great democracy must be progressive or it will soon cease to be great or a democracy. Aggressive fighting for the right is the noblest sport the world affords. In popular government results worthwhile can only be achieved by people who combine worthy ideals with practical good sense. If I must choose between righteousness and peace, I choose righteousness”.
